    PATDEX is an expert system which carries out case-based reasoning for the fault diagnosis of complex machines. It is integrated in the MOLTKE workbench for technical diagnosis, which was developed at the university of Kaiserslautern over the past years, MOLTKE contains other parts as well, in particular a model-based approach; in PATDEX where essentially the heuristic features are located.     Genesis and Propagation of Fractal Structures During Photoelectrochemical Etching of n-Silicon

    The genesis, propagation, and dimensions of fractal-etch patterns that form anodically on front- or back-illuminated n-Si(100) photoelectrodes in contact with 11.9 M NHâ‚„F(aq) has been investigated during either linear-sweep voltammetry or when the electrode was held at a constant potential (E = +6.0 V versus Ag/AgCl). Optical images collected in situ during electrochemical experiments revealed the location and underlying mechanism of initiation and propagation of the structures on the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) data collected for samples emersed from the electrolyte at varied times provided detailed information about the chemistry of the surface during fractal etching. The fractal structure was strongly influenced by the orientation of the crystalline Si sample. The etch patterns were initially generated at points along the circumference of bubbles that formed upon immersion of n-Si(100) samples in the electrolyte, most likely due to the electrochemical and electronic isolation of areas beneath bubbles. XPS data showed the presence of a tensile-stressed silicon surface throughout the etching process as well as the presence of SiO_xF_y on the surface. The two-dimensional fractal dimension D_(f,2D) of the patterns increased with etching time to a maximum observed value of D_(f,2D)=1.82. Promotion of fractal etching near etch masks that electrochemically and electronically isolated areas of the photoelectrode surface enabled the selective placement of highly branched structures at desired locations on an electrode surface

    Weak localization in mesoscopic hole transport: Berry phases and classical correlations

    We consider phase-coherent transport through ballistic and diffusive two-dimensional hole systems based on the Kohn-Luttinger Hamiltonian. We show that intrinsic heavy-hole light-hole coupling gives rise to clear-cut signatures of an associated Berry phase in the weak localization which renders the magneto-conductance profile distinctly different from electron transport. Non-universal classical correlations determine the strength of these Berry phase effects and the effective symmetry class, leading even to antilocalization-type features for circular quantum dots and Aharonov-Bohm rings in the absence of additional spin-orbit interaction. Our semiclassical predictions are quantitatively confirmed by numerical transport calculations

    An Explanation Oriented Dialogue Approach and Its Application to Wicked Planning Problems

    In this paper we consider an interactive and explanation based dialogue approach to complex and `wicked' planning problems. Wicked problems are essentially imprecisely formulated problems having no clearly defined goals and constraints. The dialogue approach is aimed at reducing the problem complexity during interaction with the human expert. The involved software agents are mostly optimization procedures. The approach contains the following steps: (1) Selection of a specific concern in a proposed solution; (2) Calculation of a stakeholder defined ideal plan; and (3) Comparing the actually generated plan and the prototype based on a similarity measure. The comparison of the actual and the ideal plan looks at aspects of interest for the stakeholder such as resource consumptions or structural properties of the plan. The proposed approach is generic and was applied and customized to three classes of wicked problems: release planning, investment planning, and urban planning.     Im Bereich der Fertigungstechnik kann eine Fülle von Planungsaufgaben identifiziert werden, die für eine Bearbeitung mit Methoden der KI geeignet erscheinen. Das Projekt ARC-TEC am DFKI wendet die KADS-Methode zur systematischen Entwicklung von Expertensystemen an und erstellt Tools für alle Phasen dieser Entwicklung. Die Brauchbarkeit der entwickelten Methoden und Tools wird am Beispiel der Erstellung von Arbeitsplänen für die Drehbearbeitung demonstriert. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei der expliziten Repräsentation des konkreten Expertenwissens und der Bearbeitung des gegebenen Problems in einer der Vorgehensweise des Experten möglichst naheliegenden Weise.In the area of production engineering many planning tasks can be found which seem well-suited to be tackled using AI-methodologies. The ARC-TEC project of the DFKI uses the model based KADS approach for a systematic development of expert systems and provides tools to support the different phases of this development. The generation of work plans for manufacturing by turning is used as an example to demonstrate the applicability of the different tools and methodologies. Special focus is upon the explicit representation of the concrete experts knowledge and the problem solving strategy which closely follows the way an expert solves the problem

    Symmetry Classes in Graphene Quantum Dots: Universal Spectral Statistics, Weak Localization, and Conductance Fluctuations

    We study the symmetry classes of graphene quantum dots, both open and closed, through the conductance and energy level statistics. For abrupt termination of the lattice, these properties are well described by the standard orthogonal and unitary ensembles. However, for smooth mass confinement, special time-reversal symmetries associated with the sublattice and valley degrees of freedom are critical: they lead to block diagonal Hamiltonians and scattering matrices with blocks belonging to the unitary symmetry class even at zero magnetic field. While the effect of this structure is clearly seen in the conductance of open dots, it is suppressed in the spectral statistics of closed dots, because the intervalley scattering time is shorter than the time required to resolve a level spacing in the closed systems but longer than the escape time of the open systems.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTex, submitted to Phys.     Phosphocholine-Modified Lipooligosaccharides of Haemophilus influenzae Inhibit ATP-Induced IL-1beta Release by Pulmonary Epithelial Cells

    Phosphocholine-modified bacterial cell wall components are virulence factors enabling immune evasion and permanent colonization of the mammalian host, by mechanisms that are poorly understood. Recently, we demonstrated that free phosphocholine (PC) and PC-modified lipooligosaccharides (PC-LOS) from Haemophilus influenzae, an opportunistic pathogen of the upper and lower airways, function as unconventional nicotinic agonists and efficiently inhibit the ATP-induced release of monocytic IL-1beta. We hypothesize that H. influenzae PC-LOS exert similar effects on pulmonary epithelial cells and on the complex lung tissue. The human lung carcinoma-derived epithelial cell lines A549 and Calu-3 were primed with lipopolysaccharide from Escherichia coli followed by stimulation with ATP in the presence or absence of PC or PC-LOS or LOS devoid of PC. The involvement of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors was tested using specific antagonists. We demonstrate that PC and PC-LOS efficiently inhibit ATP-mediated IL-1beta release by A549 and Calu-3 cells via nicotinic acetylcholine receptors containing subunits alpha7, alpha9, and/or alpha10. Primed precision-cut lung slices behaved similarly. We conclude that H. influenzae hijacked an endogenous anti-inflammatory cholinergic control mechanism of the lung to evade innate immune responses of the host. These findings may pave the way towards a host-centered antibiotic treatment of chronic airway infections with H. influenzae

    The Laser Astrometric Test of Relativity: Science, Technology, and Mission Design

    The Laser Astrometric Test of Relativity (LATOR) experiment is designed to explore general theory of relativity in the close proximity to the Sun -- the most intense gravitational environment in the solar system. Using independent time-series of highly accurate measurements of the Shapiro time-delay (interplanetary laser ranging accurate to 3 mm at 2 AU) and interferometric astrometry (accurate to 0.01 picoradian), LATOR will measure gravitational deflection of light by the solar gravity with accuracy of 1 part in a billion -- a factor ~30,000 better than currently available. LATOR will perform series of highly-accurate tests in its search for cosmological remnants of scalar field in the solar system.
